Grounding, also known as earthing, is the practice of connecting to the earth’s surface.

This can be done through skin contact with the ground, such as barefoot walking or sitting on the earth, or using products that conduct the earth’s energy, like earthing mats or earthing sheets.

When you take time to ground yourself, you are sending a message to your body that you are safe and cared for…

What Is Grounding or Earthing? – Video Transcript

Unbeknown to me, as I child in South Africa I did lots of grounding and earthing.

I very rarely had shoes on at home, so was in contact with the grass a lot, and on childhood holidays the beach was my playground.  As an adult, now living in the UK, where the water can be really cold, I still love paddling and walking on the beach, yes those are my feet.

In summer time I love taking my shoes off and splashing about, I am not quite so keen when the cold weather sets in, however the beach is just as alluring in winter, in fact I enjoy each season with its own moods and temperatures, it’s like my umbilical cord is connected to the beach.

Nick Polizzi provided some lovely science-y stuff for me, about loving splashing around on the beach. It’s actually called grounding or earthing, and it turns out that the sensation we feel when our feet make contact with the earth, grass, or as in walking on a beach, moist sand, is more than just a feeling.

This therapeutic touch of mother earth is laden with remarkable health benefits, like:

  • Reducing Inflamation

  • Boosting antioxidants in our body

  • Improving sleep

  • Promoting healthy blood flow

A study done by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, found there is a groundbreaking, powerful heart health effect when skin comes into contact with the earth.  The upshot of this study means that walking barefoot substantially promotes healthier circulation in our bodies.

A later study in the same journal found that “grounding” or “earthing” may help regulate both the endocrine and nervous systems as well.

So what’s not to like about walking barefoot if it can boost our energy, balance our mood, clarify our thinking, and perhaps even save our lives. And yes, this is me videoing with my feet splashing about.

So… head outdoors, find a piece of mother earth that appeals to you, the garden, a park, a beach, wherever, it doesn’t matter.

  • Take your shoes and socks off
  • And really take your time with this
  • Take a few nice deep breaths, and focus your attention on your feet
  • Then shift your attention to your whole body and feel the sensation that runs through your being…
  • Perhaps think about the benefits the your cells are experiencing, because they are.

That’s it…. so simple and easy to do, and also so powerful for our wellbeing.

Many, many years ago, when I lived on the 9th floor, I remember being told to move somewhere where I would be next to mother earth. Now I understand why, we are earth dwellers, and I lived suspended on the 9th floor like a sky walker.

I did move eventually, from my much loved flat and it’s amazing view, and did feel a lot more grounded, and dare I say, healthier.

So I recommend you do this grounding or earthing activity a couple of times a week for better heart health, better wellbeing and overall happiness.

That’s my sharing for today.
